For almost five days I have been in Creswick, a small city about 135 km nothern side Melbourne,  joining an APGC symposium. APGC stand for Air Pollution and Global Change. The symposium itself was effectively only three days i.e. 8-10 December 2008. This year, the symposium took a theme “Plant funtioning in a changing environment”. There were about 78 registered participants who came from different parts of the the word. It was rather a small gathering of scientists, but as many participants feel, we like it because with that rather  small number of participants, a more friendly environment was created, this hardly happened if the symposium was attended by hundreds participants.

The symposium was organized very well, efficiently and efectively by Michael Tausz as a Chairman of the organizing committee. He offcouse helped by a team such as Luit J. de Kok from Netherland as a secretary, and some other plant scientists.

During three  days symposium I’ve learnt a lot, especially in the subjects  of interaction between plant functioning and the atmosphere, climate change and mitigation of global change factors. Several prominent  speakers have delivered excellent and important talks on the subjects. I will discuss this more detail in another post.  

For this time I would like to express my gratitude to  Michael Tausz and all the organizing committe, for giving me the opportunity to present my paper in the symposium, for their excellent work in organizing the event, and their hospitality. I also would like to thank  friends whom I met and talked a lot during the symposium’s break, and here are some of them:

-Liangmin Wang, a nice Chinese senior man who hardly find himself hungry for food. I hope you’ll increase the apetite to your foods. 

-Ilemobayo Oguntimehin, a Nigerian who is going to  finish his PhD in Hiroshima University Japan. Good luck for your viva and final presentation of your thesis. My advice, don’t wear your hat during the viva.  

– P. Ratna Kumar, an Indian gentleman who once get headache for not been able to sleep, Hopefuly after the symposium you will be able to sleep well. Come on Ratna, it was only few days you left your family…

– Piyanut Khanema, a Thai girl who is going to get married soon. Good luck for you.          

– Muhammad Shahbaz, a Pakistani who also finishing his PhD in University of Groningen, Netherland. Don’t do a lot of studies friend, since you have to deliver your knowledge to others too. 

– Stanislaw Cieslik, a senior scientist, a kind of multinational person I guess, but has been staying in Italy for more than 20 years. Don’t eat too much pasta Sir !

–  Hideyuki Shimizu, a senior scientist from Japan. I am waiting for your visit to Bandung Sir. Arigato !

 – Saman Sanaweera, a Srilankan scientist who has been long time work in Australia. Great work Saman !

– Malcolm J. Hawkesford, an English senior scientist. Thank you for having nice discussion during breakfast times.

– Katri Kostiainen of Finland who travelled more than 30 hours to Melbourne. Have a nice journey to Tasmania and back home. I believe you will have good research funds for the years to come. Now if that happen, don’t forget me ya, share with me a little bit 🙂 

– Ineke Stulen, who has just retired from University of Groningen.   

and many others, especially my collegue from Indonesia: Endah Sulistyawati …, it’s wonderfull to meet you all, thank you for your kindness and have a pleasant and safe journey home. Hopefully we can meet again in the next symposium. Where and when will that be Michael ?

Lebaran ini saya ketemu buah jamblang di Bekasi. Ceritanya ada saudara dari Karawang yang mengirim buah tersebut untuk ibu saya .. wah saya antusias banget ketemu buah yang sudah tidak pernah saya temukan lebih dari 30 tahunan mungkin… Dulu waktu kecil saya sering makan buah jamblang ini. Kebetulan di kebun nenek saya di Bekasi ada pohonnya. Semenjak kuliah di Bandung tahun 80 hingga saat ini saya tidak pernah menemukan buah itu, barangkali karena saya tidak terlalu sering dan serius juga mencarinya. Menurut isteri saya dia pernah mlihat buah itu di pasar Cikutra, tapi gak beli karena gak tahu kalau saya kanget banget sama tuh buah. Jamblang rasanya sepet, sedikit asem. Biasanya sebelum dimakan, buah jamblang dimasukkan ke wadah terutup campur sedikit garam lalu dikocok-kocok, segeeer !

Di beberapa tempat lain jamblang disebut juga jambu keling atau duwet, spesienya Syzigium cumini, termasuk kedalam kelompok jambu-jambuan (Myrtaceae). Khasiatnya menurut beberapa literatur: obat diabetes (kencing manis) dan diare. Rasa sepetnya duwet mungkin karena ada kandungan zat kimia, flavonoid atau alkaloid yang bermanfaat.
